A botched transition is the number-one cause of diarrhoea when changing diet. Here's how to do it right, over 7-10 days and without any scares.

Dog in front of kibble, a transition mix and cooked natural food

Switching your dog from kibble to natural food is easier than it looks, but there’s one mistake that almost always ruins it: doing it all at once. A sudden change of diet is the number-one cause of diarrhoea and vomiting during this transition. The good news: with a gradual transition over 7 to 10 days, most dogs manage it without any trouble.

Why you can’t switch all at once

Your dog’s gut flora is adapted to what it eats now. When you change the diet overnight, that flora can’t keep up and digestive upsets appear. Introducing the new food little by little gives it time to adapt.

The 7-10 day transition, step by step

Mix the new food with the usual one, raising the proportion every two or three days:

  • Days 1-3: 25% natural food + 75% kibble.
  • Days 4-6: 50% + 50%.
  • Days 7-9: 75% natural food + 25% kibble.
  • Day 10 onwards: 100% natural food.

If your dog has a delicate stomach, stretch each stage by a couple of days. There’s no rush.

How much to feed

When you move to a natural diet the volume changes, because natural food usually has more moisture than kibble. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines based on your dog’s weight and activity level, and fine-tune by watching its body condition: you should be able to feel the ribs without seeing them stand out. If you’re unsure about portions for an overweight dog or one with health conditions, check with your vet.

Signs it’s going well (and that it isn’t)

Good sign: smaller, firmer stools, good energy and a healthy appetite. It’s normal for stools to change in appearance on a natural diet.

Pause and check with your vet if: there’s diarrhoea that doesn’t ease within 48 hours, repeated vomiting, lethargy or loss of appetite. If that happens, go back to the previous ratio and slow down.

Common mistakes worth avoiding

  • Switching all at once “to get it over with”. That’s exactly what triggers the diarrhoea.
  • Mixing in too many new things at the same time (new food + new snacks + supplements). Introduce one thing at a time.
  • Obsessing over the scales in the first week. Give the body time to settle.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take a dog to get used to natural food?

The transition lasts 7 to 10 days, but the visible improvement in digestion, coat or energy is usually noticeable within a few weeks.

Can I mix kibble and natural food long term?

Yes, many owners combine the two. Just make sure you adjust the portions so you don’t overfeed.

What if my dog refuses the natural food at first?

It’s rare, because it’s usually more appetising than kibble. If it happens, slow down the mixing and avoid rewarding it with other treats between meals while it adjusts.
